Sets up and operates a variety of machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, planers, and precision grinders to make metal parts, mechanisms, tools, or machines to exacting tolerances and dimensions.

Responsibilities

Interprets blueprints, sketches, and engineering specifications; determines sequence of operations, number of cuts required, and method of setup; uses a variety of machinist's hand tools and precision measuring instruments; makes standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work, tooling, feeds, and speeds; measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points to lay out stock for machining; fits and assembles precision parts into mechanical equipment and determines material, parts, and equipment required. Some machines may be numerically controlled. May monitor and verify quality in accordance with statistical process or other control procedures and certify/test product. Typically requires completion of a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.

Qualifications

- High School diploma or GED.
- Three (3) years operating manufacturing machines, including a CNC lathe, mill drill, grinding machine, CNC mill machine and deburring.
- Prefer an Associates degree in a technical discipline.
Must be able to:
- Read, write legibly, and understand English.
- Perform basic math (add, subtract, multiple, and divide).
- Mechanical/technical aptitude.
- Attendance dependability.
- Ability to work independently.
- Flexibility with changes in work requirements.
- Ability to stay focused and meet deadlines, which may require overtime.
- Attention to detail.
- Perform basic computer skills, such as open and save files along with basic data entry.
- Understand basic terminology used in the job functional area.
- Ability to read a blue print.
- May require lifting, pulling, pushing, and carrying up to fifty (50) pounds.
- Frequent bending, climbing stairs, and reaching.
- Sitting for up to ten (10) hours per day, standing up to ten (10) hours per day, or a combination of sitting and standing.
